LAMAR - The Lamar Police Department responded to an alarm at Great Southern Bank on the west side of the square in Lamar at approximately 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4. Once at the bank, they discovered a robbery had occurred.
The personnel at the bank followed every procedure for handling such an incident and were also able to identify the robber who was Daniel Louis Slotterback, 52, Lamar.
The police, assisted by members of the Barton County Sheriff’s Department, began a search for the suspect and put out information to other law enforcement officials. At 11:33 a.m., the suspect’s vehicle was spotted by an officer with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and he was apprehended just south of Civil War Road outside Carthage.
Slotterback was then taken back to Barton County Jail where he was held until he was taken to Springfield on Thursday where he will await filing of federal charges. The FBI is handling the investigation from this point because of the federal charges.
According to Chief of Police Ron Hager, Slotterback went into the bank and gave teller Brad Schnaufer a note saying he had a gun and he wanted all his $100’s, $50’s and $20’s. Schnaufer complied as instructed by bank authorities. Hager said when Slotterback was apprehended, the total amount of money he had stolen was only short a small amount. The total amount he did take can not be released.
Hager also said since Slotterback didn’t actually have a weapon, it will be better for him once he goes to trial.
According to word on the street Slotterback had gone into the bank several days in a row before he attempted the robbery. Those who know him say he has been depressed because of financial problems.
He works for Redico as a sales representative selling janitorial supplies.
Kelly Polonus, a spokesperson for Great Southern, told the Democrat on Thursday morning that bank officials were very pleased with the way local authorities handled the situation.
