(ARA) - If you're interested in spectacular cliffs dropping into the Atlantic Ocean, cozy woods complete with a deer or moose, curvy roads winding through hills with a new scenic surprise around every turn or quaint communities nestled along a beautiful lake, you might want to consider planning your next vacation in Maine.
The summer months are reasonably busy with tourists, especially New Englanders driving up the coast on the weekends, but you can get avoid the peak season in the winter months or travel during the middle of the week to see Maine in its splendid natural colors during the warm months.
Book cheap flights into Portland or Bangor to start your adventure. Portland is considered the metropolis of Maine, and is located on the beautiful Casco Bay, which has plenty of historical stories to explore and learn about in the forts and lighthouses along the shore. You won't want to miss the traffic of boats along the waterfront either, and if you're a fisherman, be sure to sign up for a chartered trip, either on the many lakes or the Atlantic.
Bangor has plenty of charm in little shops and winding one-way streets. Plus, it is only a short drive to Acadia National Park, which is where you can experience breathtaking views overlooking the ocean. Even in winter, parts of the auto loop are open, and if you catch it on a clear day, you won't be disappointed.
Maine is known for its hiking trails, especially through pristine wilderness that isn't frequently habited by humans. The Appalachian Trail ends (or starts) in Maine and is joined by other national treasures like Acadia National Park, Saint Croix Island International Historic Site and Roosevelt Campobello International Park. In addition, Maine has another 40 state parks perfect for camping, fishing and hiking in the warmer weather, and snowmobiling, skiing or snowshoeing in the winter months.
Or you can travel even further north and find cheap flights to Presque Isle to explore "The Country." This is where you can dip your toes into more than 2000 streams, lakes and rivers, enjoy the stunning color of potato fields in full flower, or catch the trees in full fall display of brilliant reds and golds mixed in against the dark green coniferous trees.
Presque Isle has history and science wrapped up by honoring the first hot air balloon to cross the Atlantic - it departed from Presque Isle in 1978. For space buffs, it also has the world's largest scale model of the solar system, about 40 miles wide, with the center located at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Maine's middle country, also called the Highlands, is picturesque with woods, deer, moose, mountains, rivers, lakes and meadows. This is where you can play, whether it's whitewater rafting on the Penobscot or Kennebec rivers, snowmobiling across Moosehead Lake in Greenville in the wintertime, or sampling some of the delectable seafood Maine has readily available.
