(ARA) - Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women older than 25 in the United States, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), but many people aren't aware of how serious the problem is.
Whether it's men or women, the disease claims a life every minute, and that's why the AHA has been working to get the word out with its "Go Red for Women" campaign.
The good news about taking care of your heart is that the steps you would take to improve your overall health will naturally benefit your heart. It makes sense - the heart keeps blood flowing through your entire body, and when the heart stops, the rest of the body does too. Take a holistic approach to your wellness to ensure that your heart is in good shape.
It's great to want to slim down, but crash diets and other extreme measures that cause you to lose weight fast aren't the healthiest solution. Not only are you more likely to find a yo-yo effect taking place after following an outlandish regime for a short time, they can put a real strain on your body. Instead, look to change your eating habits to include more natural foods.
Try shopping the perimeter of the grocery store, where you'll find more whole foods-ones that aren't laden with chemicals and additives. Eating healthy foods high in fiber and vitamins and low in saturated and trans-fats will help you to be healthier - in heart and body. To get started toward healthy eating, reserve a special dinner at a local restaurant that focuses on fresh and healthy foods - you'll discover how delicious they can be.
Keep your stress levels in check, as much as possible. If you've had a tough day at the office, carve out at least a few moments to relax at home. Draw yourself a bubble bath and soak in the soothing ambiance, or simply close the door and immerse yourself in a favorite book. Adding calming or pleasant scents to your environment can have a strong effect on your ability to relax. Lighting a scented candle in fragrances that help relieve tension has an added benefit - the soft light that they throw is also calming and restorative.
You can encourage your loved ones to take a break from stress by giving them a candle from Yankee Candle Company. Scented candles with a soft glowing light can help a person relax and unwind from difficult days caused by work, relationships or hectic schedules. Become a fan of Yankee Candles on Facebook and send candle gifts to all of your friends to help them keep their stress levels to a minimum and protect their hearts.
Bad habits can be hard to break, but remember that you might be hurting your heart by keeping them. Whether it's cutting back on junk food or the ultimate challenge of stopping smoking, try to replace bad habits with good ones. Not only will it help to take your mind off what you're trying to avoid, but you'll be working toward a healthier heart.
