LAMAR-Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Konantz Warden Funeral Home for Helen Louise Higgins, 91, Lamar, who died Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Truman Healthcare, following a short illness. Burial will be at Newport Cemetery.

Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m.

Survivors include a son, Anthony “Tony” Higgins, Littleton, Colo.; a granddaughter, Amy Schultz, Germany; a grandson, Peter Higgins, Detroit, Mich.; one great-grandchild; four sister-in-laws, Betty Barker, Nellie Mae Higgins, Mary Ann Higgins and June Miles and many nieces and nephews, as well as extended family caregivers, Alvin and Emma Yoder.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Royal and two sisters, Gladys and Dorothy.

Mrs. Higgins was born Sept. 25, 1924, in Rudd, Iowa, to Arista Barker and Lusia (Moeller) Barker. She and her husband made their home in Lamar in 1956 and she was employed as a doctor's assistant at the Lamar Clinic, as a secretary at Meeker Leather Products and MSSU in Joplin and was also a state park tour guide at Truman Birthplace. She was also a voting clerk for Newport Township.

She married Oren “Jody” Higgins on Sept. 1, 1950. He died March 6, 2007.
