CARTHAGE-Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage for Evelyn B. Shockey, 97, Carthage, formerly of Lamar, who died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin. Entombment will be in Park Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Daniel Funeral Home, Lamar.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Grace Episcopal Church or Oklahoma Educational Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Dumm and husband Gary, rural Jasper and Sharon Quigley and husband Bill, Richardson, Texas; a son, Phil Shockey and wife Carolyn, Norman, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Christopher W. Dumm, Matthew P. Dumm, Elizabeth D. Dumm, Heather J. Quigley Berryhill, Douglas A. Quigley, N. Colleen Quigley McCord, Aaron M. Shockey and Amanda C. Shockey Porter; 15 great-grandchildren and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edwin, Ray and Harlan Riffel and a sister, Ella Mae Kline.

Mrs. Shockey was born March 2, 1919, in Lakin, Kan., to George and Pauline (Brach) Riffel. After graduating from Lakin High School she went to work for Drs. V. Mae and Norman Leopold, later moving with them to Odessa, Texas. There she met Hershel Shockey and they were married May 1, 1940. As newlyweds, they moved to Kansas City where he finished medical school and she worked with Drs. J.L. and Margaret Jones. After his graduation, they moved to Galena, Mo. for two years, then to Greenfield for 2 ½ years and later settled in Harrah, Okla. for 35 years.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she assisted her husband in his medical practice and was a talented seamstress. After moving to Barton County in 1980, they became active members of Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage, where she was involved in St. Martha's Guild. After sharing 53 years of life together, he preceded her in death on May 11, 1993. Remaining active, she enjoyed the fellowship of good friends at the Lamar Country Club, several bridge clubs, the Wednesday Reading Club and Chapter EP, P.E.O.
