Lamar Democrat photos/Richard Cooper Lamar VFW Post 3691 honored this year’s winners in the Voice of Democracy essay contest for high school students. All were from Lamar High School. Winners, along with VFW officers associated with the contest, were, left to right, Merdith Chapman, Senior Vice-Commander; first place, freshman Autumn Shelton; second place, junior Jensen Worsley; third place, junior Garrett Morey; Quartermaster Tom Reed. Each winner received a cash reward and a medal. First place winner advances to state competition.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger The Barton County Community Foundation featured Vintage Vegas on Saturday evening, April 13, at Thiebaud Auditorium in Lamar. During the festivities, Elaine Davis, left, president of Lamar Community Betterment, was awarded $1M from a private charitable fund, in order to purchase the old Redneck building at 1705 Gulf. The building will be used jointly by the newly formed Lamar YMCA and the Lamar R-1 School. Watch for more information in the April 24 edition of the Democrat. BCCF board member Nancy Curless, right, presented Davis with the check, along with a $5,000 check from the foundation.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger The First Baptist Church stepped outside of its walls on Sunday morning, as members of the congregation, along with others from the community, gathered at the Wyatt Earp Park in order to worship the Lord. Music sheets were handed out to those attending, with the church’s worship leader Steve Livingston and the Praise Band from the church leading in the music. Dr. Robert Hodson, senior pastor at the church, shared the sermon. According to Ron Sandberg and Ed Patterson, a total of 198 were in attendance on this beautiful day.
