LAMAR- Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamar for Mary Jean Schiernbeck, 88, Lamar, who died Monday evening, April 17, 2017, at Truman Healthcare, surrounded by the love of her family. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Daniel Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Barton County Memorial Hospital or American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include two sons, Milo Schiernbeck and wife Wanda, Schleswig, Iowa and Merlin Schiernbeck and wife Brenda, Osceola, Wisc.; two daughters, Marlene Shaw and husband Tom, Liberal and Marlys Buckner and husband Steve, Lamar; a brother, Norm Bengford, San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Margaret Jennett, Muscatine, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Norbert, Bernard, Wilbert, Ken, Tom, John and Ted Bengford; three sisters, Loretta Bengford, Alice Haffner and Madeline McTasney and two great-grandchildren, Dakota Schiernbeck and Travis Schiernbeck.

Mrs. Schiernbeck was born June 18, 1928, in Odebolt, Iowa, to Bernard and Irma Jean (Dinges) Bengford. She married Hugo Schiernbeck on Oct. 25, 1946, at Papillion, Neb., and they celebrated nearly 68 years together before his death on Aug. 24, 2014.

She and her husband were an inspirational team as they farmed and reared their four children. In addition to being a devoted farmwife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, she had worked as a retail clerk in various stores in Lamar for many years. She served her community as a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer and was a faithful and active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
