LAMAR- Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Daniel Funeral Home for Walter Charles Cody, 79, Lamar, who died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 21, 2019, in Collins, while on a camping trip.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Contributions are suggested to Barton County Senior Center, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include a son, Todd Cody, Grandview; two daughters, Cindy Clements and husband Stan, Tampa, Fla. and Cathy Lane, Lamar; six grandchildren, Chelsea Clements, Carmen Hollister and husband Dallas, Dillon Clements, Cody Rawlngs, Keirstin Cody and Brett Cody and four great-grandchildren, Kaysen Garfield, Brielle Cody, Jaxon Hollister and Ryker Crim. Additional survivors include his wife Joyce Cody’s three sons and two daughters and he was known as “Papa Walt” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce; three brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Cody was born Oct. 7, 1939, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Edward Lyle Cody and Bessie Cogley. He was a 1957 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He farmed in Hancock, Iowa and Walnut, Iowa for several years prior to moving to Lamar in 1984, when he purchased the Lamar Blue top Inn that he operated for several years. He had also worked at Lamarti’s, Tractors and TATS as a driver for many years.

He married Joyce Ann Johnson on June 28, 2003. She died Dec. 17, 2008. He was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church, had served as a board member of the Barton County Senior Center, was a past member of Lamar Rotary and received the Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year.
