CARTHAGE- A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lake Cemetery in Lamar for Thelma Corine Nielsen, 95, recently residing in Carthage, who died Monday, Aug. 26, 2019, at St. Luke’s Nursing Center in Carthage.

Arrangements are under the direction of Konantz Warden Funeral Home, Lamar.

Survivors include a sisters-in-law, Edith Walters, Lamar and Lorraine Lake, Sebring, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen Walters and Paul Walters, Jr. and two sisters, Gene Youngs and Gloria Mayfield.

Mrs. Nielsen was born Aug. 28, 1923, in Lamar, to Paul Eugene and Cora Ann (Long) Walters. She graduated Lamar High School and attended Drury College in Springfield, Park College in Parkville and the University of Kansas City in Kansas City, Mo. After college she worked as a secretary in Kansas City, Mo. and Phoenix, Ariz. before joining the Department of State, Foreign Service, in 1946. She served tours of duty in Iceland, Austria, Kenya, Turkey and Afghanistan. While in Afghanistan she met and married another Foreign Service Officer, Steve Nielsen. They then served tours of duty together in Liberia, Vietnam, Washington, D.C. and Mexico.

She retired in 1976 after serving 30 years in the Foreign Service. After her husband’s retirement in 1978, they moved to Hinton, Iowa and in 1984 moved to Bella Vista, Ark., where they lived until his death in 2018. She then moved to St. Luke’s Nursing Center in April of 2018.
