LAMAR- Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Daniel Funeral Home for Velma Arlene (Long) Miller, 97, Lamar, who died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Contributions are suggested and made payable to Barone Alzheimer’s Care Center Activities Dept., in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol Anne Farrell and spouse Jim Farrell, Overland Park, Kan. and Susan Splitter and spouse August Splitter, Lamar; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Walker Miller, Liberal; her sister, Mary Hanneman, Belton; seven grandchildren, Joel Miller, Lawrence Splitter, Christopher Splitter, Adam Splitter, Michelle Farrell Emerson, Stephanie Farrell Strick and Elizabeth Farrell Feris; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband George and son Lawrence, four brothers, Marvin, Howard, Linden and Dayton Long; a sister, Leta Alumbaugh Skief and a nephew, David Hanneman.

Mrs. Miller was born June 24, 1922, in Vernon County, to Harley and Freda (Yount) Long. She attended Bakers Grove grade school before attending Liberal High School.

She married George Frederick Miller of Irwin on Oct. 25, 1941. They lived on their farm in the Irwin community for 49 years until Mr. Miller’s death in 1991. Mrs. Miller then moved to Lamar. She worked at the Big Smith Clothing plant in Lamar from 1953 until its closure and continued at the plant in Carthage. After leaving Big Smith she worked at Dot’s Gift Shop and finished her work career as a cashier at the Blue Top restaurant.

She was devoted to her family and enjoyed quilting, cooking, baking and dancing. She was a member of the Lamar First Baptist Church and the Lamar women’s Sew & Sew Club.
