DOROTHY F ROBERTS

LAMAR- Services are pending with Daniel Funeral Home for Dr. Dorothy F. Roberts, 98, who died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, at Truman Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Lamar.

Contributions may be made to the Barton County Library, Barton County Senior Center or Nathan’s Place or a charity of one’s choice.

Survivors include a nephew, David Roberts and wife Teresa; nieces, Carol Reavley and Ann Chesnut and husband Judd, all of Lamar; five great nephews; five great nieces and many great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Fleetwood, Belton and a brother, Elwood Roberts, Lamar.

Mrs. Roberts was born Jan. 16, 1921, in Jasper, to Ollie E. and Fay (Grim) Roberts. In 1932 the family moved to Lamar, where she graduated from Lamar High School. She also attended and graduated from Park College in Parkville (A.B.), University of Chicago, Chicago, Ill. (PhD) and Columbia University School of Law, New York City, NY (LL.B.).

During World War II she worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation (UNRRA) in Washington, DC., then in Occupied Germany in the UNRRA Displaced Persons Program.

She briefly practiced law in Lamar, during which time she served as the first juvenile officer of the 28th Judicial Court.

She taught at various schools at various times, including the University of Connecticut, Storrs and Hartford, Conn., the University of Maryland, military bases in Germany and Italy, American University, Washington, D.C. and David and Elkins College, Elkins, W.V. She traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. She enjoyed reading, Bridge and the theatre.

She was a member and/or officer at various times of the American and West Virginia Political Science Association, American Association of University Professors, Missouri Bar, West Virginia Humanities Council, Missouri Juvenile Association, Missouri and Barton County Democratic Committee, Barton County Library Board, Arts Council of Barton County and Lamar Country Club.
