LAMAR- Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Daniel Funeral Home for James Terry Cofield, 87, Lamar, who died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, at his home. Burial will be in Howell Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Contributions are suggested and made payable to Alzheimer’s Association, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; one son, James Terry Cofield Jr., Lamar; one daughter, Dorothy Jane Chastain and husband Charlie, Farmington; two stepsons, Jerry Bishop, McCook, Neb. and James Bishop and wife Jennifer, Lamar; five grandchildren, Tammy, Heather, Tra, Jared and Joel; five step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, Bentlee Lucas Ehrsam and Glenn Hammock, a long time friend who started working for Mr. Cofield in 1967 and looked to him as a father figure.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Jane Cofield; four brothers, Edward Cofield, C.J. Cofield, James Cofield and Cecil Cofield.

Mr. Cofield was born July 9, 1932, in Bardwell, Texas, to James Gilliam and Mary Ethel (Vise) Cofield. He married Betty Jane Burton on Feb. 9, 1952, in Dallas, Texas and she preceded him in death. He then married Carol Jean Ward on Sept. 27, 2014, in Lamar, and she survives of the home.

Mr. Cofield started Safety Lights Inc. in 1968 and purchased Eagle Lights in 1978 and provided highway paving, striping and maintenance. He was a member of the Houston, Texas Chamber of Commerce and operated his ranch in East Texas before moving to Lamar in 1989, where he owned several ranches in Missouri.
