LIBERAL- Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Verdella Free Will Baptist Church for Roger Phillips, 90, rural Liberal, who died Friday, Nov. 4, 2022. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening, at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Missouri Free Will Baptist Youth Camp.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Ionia; son, Clinton Phillips; daughter Lora McWilliams and husband Lonnie and Lynette Emmerson and husband Brent; grandchildren, Charity Burchett and husband Craig, Chris Waring, Josh Ablian, John Emmerson and wife Kassidy and Amanda Emmerson and great grandchildren Coby, Cooper, and Camryn Burchett.

He was preceded in death by brothers Andrew, Donald and Clifford Phillips and a great-granddaughter Caitlyn Burchett.

Mr. Phillips was born July 22, 1932, to Earl and Amanda (Ball) Phillips, at their rural Iantha home. He graduated as president of his Liberal High School class of 1950.

He married Ionia Hizar on July 6, 1952, in Verdella Free Will Baptist Church.

He served in the U.S. Army and was sent to Korea during the Korea War. He was a heavy equipment operator, where he helped to build a church, school and several roads in Korea.

Roger will be most remembered for his faith in Jesus. He took every opportunity to witness and invite someone to church. He attended Verdella FWB church his entire life, serving as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and as a deacon since 1955. He also volunteered at the Free Will Baptist Youth Camp doing repairs and assisted in building the boys and girls cabins for the Central Western Association. After he was unable to physically attend the camp, he enjoyed seeing the progress through the pictures and stories of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who attend each year.
