COVID update

December 19, 2022

With Christmas and New Year’s upon us, this is just a quick reminder from Barton County Health Administrator Joel Dermott that there are lots of Grinches still circulating in the area. He reported that COVID is still active, with all five Omicron variants being found in statewide sewershed testing. Flu and RSV remain at very high levels throughout the country and according to Dermott, there are only one or two states in the entire nation that are not experiencing a high level of flu cases.

“With these elevated numbers, hospitalizations are also up,” said Dermott, adding, “Age ranges of those impacted are the spectrum.” He stated that wherever one goes, whether it’s across the country or just down the road, these viruses and others are ever present. He reminded everyone to be cautious and try their best to protect the most valuable among us.

Dermott stated, “I wish there was an Island of Misfit Viruses where we could dump these critters off, but that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon and until that day comes around, enjoy the time spent with family and friends.”

“Have a very Merry Christmas and may God bless this New Year,” said Dermott.
