Mrs. Schmitt was born June 11, 1926, in Blackwell, Okla., to Matthew and Fannie (Kern) Jernigan. She grew up in Blackwell, Okla. and Bigelow, Ark. She married Stanley Schmitt in 1946, at Winfield, Kan., and a couple of years later they settled in Lamar. The two managed Stan’s Burgers & Shake, a popular drive-in. After that, she was a cashier at the Blue Top Restaurant.

She enjoyed clogging, being a Red Hat and traveling with the Holiday Rambler RV Club. She was a Winter Texan, where she was the church pianist at Trophy Gardens. While she resided at Maple Senior Living it brought her great joy to play the piano for the residents, especially when they sang along with her. She was a faithful member of First Christian Church for nearly 70 years, where she loved playing the piano. She was quite talented and also played the organ, violin and ukulele.
