Mr. Smith was born Dec. 19, 1935, at his family home near Golden City, to Norval and Katie (Wright) Smith. After graduating from Lockwood High School in the spring of 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Edith Pitts on Aug. 28, 1954. They made their home and farmed in Barton County, rearing their son Joe and sharing nearly 62 years together. He was a member of Newport Baptist Church.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and absolutely loved to hunt, whether it be deer, turkey, quail or small game. For him, a perfect day of hunting would include the companionship of close friends and family, especially Joe and his grandson, Tyler.
