Lamar Democrat/Richard Cooper
Beth Bazal appeared before the Lamar City Council at its December 18 meeting to seek city assistance in upgrading the Harry S. Truman Birthplace site. The project involves seeking a $161,000 matching grant ($322,000 total) to build a parking lot, a replica of the Truman mule barn, and a public rest room, all on property that is part of the Birthplace site. This replaces an earlier planned expansion that the state's Park Department has ignored for several years. Mayor Kent Harris asked if the city's matching $161,000 could be in the form of in-kind assistance rather than cash, which Bazal confirmed was allowable. The council then unanimously agreed to pay the $1,500 fee for a grant writer.
