LIBERAL- Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church in Liberal for David George VanKirk, 70, Liberal, who died Sunday, April 7, 2019, at University of Kansas Health System, Kansas City, Kan.

Arrangements are under the direction of Daniel Funeral Home, Lamar.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, at First Christian Church in Liberal.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer VanKirk and a son, Michael VanKirk, both of Liberal; siblings, Beverly Fleharty, Fort Scott, Kan., Jean Taylor, Pittsburg, Kan., Judy McManis and husband Bill, Pittsburg, Kan., Jimmy VanKirk and wife Julia, Mulberry, Kan., Donna Cobler, Liberal and Dixie Hayes, Owasso, Okla. and one granddaughter, Winter Rose VanKirk.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack VanKirk and Bob VanKirk and three sisters, Bonnie VanKirk, Rebecca VanKirk and Dorothy VanKirk.

Mr. VanKirk was born April 1, 1949, in Liberal, to Arthur McClellan and Marjorie Maxine (Coffey) VanKirk. He served his country in the United States Army and was commended for heroic acts of valor in combat. He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal with the “V” Device and the Purple Heart Medal, along with a number of other commendations.

He wore many hats during his years in the work force and retired as the senior officer for the Liberal Police Department after a 30 year long career. He was a member of the Christian Church of Liberal and had been a member of the American Legion and VFW for over 30 years. Above all, he was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and friend.
