DELBERT VOLKMAN
NEVADA, Mo.- A private committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dunnegan Grove Cemetery in Nevada for Delbert Volkman, 84, Nevada, who died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, following a brief illness. Mark Mitchell will officiate.
Services are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.
Survivors include four children, Miki Pace and husband Jim, Omaha, Neb., Lynn Blank and husband Percy, Gonzales, La., Dottie Smith and husband Terry, Nevada and Kenney Volkman and wife Jessie, Nevada; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Donald Volkman and wife Linda, Lamar, Robert Volkman, Lockwood, Billy Volkman, Iowa and Earl Volkman and wife Inez, Illinois; one sister, Loretta Spilger, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and an infant daughter, Tina Volkman.
Mr. Volkman was born Feb. 10, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa, to August and Grace (Purtle) Volkman. He grew up in Iowa and later came with his family to Missouri, where he attended school in Jasper. Following high school he served in the United States Army for two years. Most of his adult life he lived in Nevada, working for the Nevada Police Department and the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department. He later drove a truck for Cartwright Van Lines until his retirement. He loved fishing, woodworking, gardening and enjoyed being around people.
He married Virginia Louise Wallace on Sept. 8, 1952, in Huntsville, Ark. She died July 5, 2009.
