ESPN takes Brooke Bearden's inspiring story worldwide

Lamar Democrat/Chris Morrow Two of Liberal's hardest working men embrace. Prior to ESPN's ceremony naming Brooke Bearden's inspiring story as one of Sportscenter's top 10 plays of the year, the Liberal volunteer fire department was celebrated. The fire department has been tested repeatedly as arsonists burned numerous buildings around town going back to mid-summer. The last fire burned the elementary gymnasium and the old high school to the ground. Through the efforts of Liberal's volunteers and the support of departments from surrounding communities, the nearby elementary school was saved. Liberal's fire chief is Brent Hanshaw and he is being thanked and hugged by superintendent of schools Bill Harvey, who has worked tirelessly in the wake of the fire to get the district's students back in school. Much work and planing remains to be done, but Thursday was a wonderful opportunity to thank the men and women of the volunteer fire department for their courage and dedication.
