JASPER- A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, at Waters Cemetery in Jasper, for Charles G. Walters, 89, a longtime Jasper resident and current resident at Truman Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lamar, who died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2020, after a three-day battle with sepsis.

Arrangements are under the direction of Konantz Warden Funeral Home, Lamar.

Survivors include his wife and two sons, Leland Walters, Kimberling City and David Walters, Lamar; two grandchildren, Moriah Cruse, Lamar and David Walters, Jasper; five great-grandchildren, Eden and Parker Cruse, Lamar and Addey, Myrah and DJ Walters, Jasper and a brother, Claude Layton, Alba.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepparents and a son Kevin Walters.

Mr. Walters was born January 28, 1931, in Nevada, Mo. and lost his mother to tuberculosis at the age of 11. He was adopted and worked for an old farm couple until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1954. He served from 1954 to 1956 and left the military with the rank of Corporal. He returned to the Nevada area where he married Jessie Pinkman and together they had Leland. They divorced and Mr. Walters raised Leland as a single father until he met Elaine Barrett, who was raising her son Kevin on her own. They married on September 5, 1964 and remained married for 55 years. The the couple moved to Truman Health and Rehab six years ago and his wife is still a resident there.

Mr. Walters worked in many different grain elevators in the area, including Producers of Grain in Nevada, Mo., MFA and Manevals of Jasper and MFA of Lamar. He retired at the age of 73. He was a family man who worked hard to provide for his family, working two and three jobs when needed. He enjoyed his grandchildren and camping.
