Mrs. Godfrey was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Lamar, to Melvin and Veda (Smith) Simms. She married Lester Eugene Godfrey on Oct. 4, 1942, at the Lamar United Methodist Church, in a double ring ceremony with her sister, Mary Alice and her husband, Ray “Tuffy” Garrison.
