She was preceded in death by her parents; her lifelong friend, Nick Pennell; her son, Lester Pennell; two grandsons, Gary Danner and Luke Mefford; a sister, Arlene Calhoun and the love of her life, Gene Hoskins.
Mrs. Pennell was born April 1, 1941, in Leeds, England, to Thomas Hanna and Rosina “Mickey” (Perry) Hannah. She later got her citizenship and proudly became an American. She attended rural school in the area and high school in Golden City. She then returned to school in her 40’s and earned her Master’s degree in Science in Education, graduating in 1986 from CMSU in Warrensburg.
She married Harold “Nick” Pennell in 1957 and although they divorced in 1974, they remained lifelong friends. Three children were born from this union.
Mrs. Pennell had recently been diagnosed with cancer and was fighting it for the second time. She was a breast cancer survivor in 2011. She was definitely no stranger with more than her share of serious health issues in the past 40 years. She diligently fought everything from congestive heart failure to diabetes, but never let it keep her from loving and enjoying life to the fullest.
She enjoyed fishing and nature, where she said she felt closer to God. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, writing poetry and working hard. Family and friends were foremost in her life and she could always be found planning events to get together. Her zest for life was an inspiration to everyone. She will be greatly missed and will always be in their hearts.
