LAMAR- Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2022, at Daniel Funeral Home for Virginia Mae Potter, 104, Lamar, who died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022. Burial was in Morehead Cemetery in Lamar.

Contributions are suggested and made payable to the Lamar United Methodist Church, Children’s Ministries, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include her children, Bruce Potter, Barb Stilabower and husband Lonnie and Carol Barr and husband Pat, all of Lamar; grandchildren, Josh Shrout and wife Melissa, Chris Shrout and wife Melissa, Angie Bailey and husband Steve, Heath Stilabower, Kim Friend and husband Rile, Jeff Barr and wife Lisa and Jon Barr and wife Kaley; great-grandchildren, Anna Shrout, Jacob Shrout, Jackson Shrout, Lauren Shrout, Peyton Bailey, Travis Bailey, Tristen Stilabower, Natalia Canet, Ryder Friend, Rex Friend, Joe Barr, Gus Barr and great-great granddaughter, Madilyn Jo Stilabower; her brother, Jewell Dearing; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Dearing and son-in-law, David Shrout.

She was preceded in death by her husband Laverne; a daughter, Ann Shrout and her brothers, George Dearing, Claude Dearing, Junior Dearing and Sterling Dearing.

Mrs. Potter was born Dec. 9, 1917, in Sheldon, to Willis and Sada (Williams) Dearing. She attended several country schools, rode a horse to Milford High School for two years, then moved to Lamar by herself to finish high school. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1936. She attended cosmetology school in Kansas City and was a hairdresser until retiring at the age of 75.

She married Laverne H. Potter on Sept. 11, 1945, in Girard, Kan. They were happily married for 38 years until his death on Jan. 30, 1983.

Mrs. Potter enjoyed traveling, growing flowers, crocheting, reading, doing puzzles and playing with her grandkids. She was a member of the Lamar United Methodist Church.
