Members of VFW Post 3691 held a Memorial Day service on Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m., at the Barton County Memorial Park, located at 2nd and Gulf St., in Lamar. This was the first year for the service to be held at this location and it proved to be a great success, drawing over 100 spectators that were able to observe the service as many sat in their chairs underneath the shade trees on the southwest corner of the park. The large United States Flag, located by the original 69 markers that were adorned with smaller flags, was the perfect setting for the ceremony as “Old Glory” swayed in the breeze. Following the laying of the wreaths by various members of the VFW and American Legion, a 21 Gun Salute was given, followed with Bryan Stevens playing “Taps”. Pictured around the flagpole are, left to right, Barton County Memorial Park Board members Sue Bennett, Gordie Godfrey, Larry Fast, Joe Davis, Jeff Clements and Tom Combs. Representing the VFW Post 3691 were, left to right, Surgeon Bill Furdaus, Post Commander Matt Pettibon, Senior Vice Commander Merdith Chapman, Post Adjutant Oscar Bronson, Chaplain Jesse Irwin, Junior Vice Commander Bryan Stevens, Trustee Keith Klug and Trustee Dawn Julian. Not pictured, but participating in the service, was American Legion Commander Clifford Nelson.
