WAVERLY, Neb.- Visitation was held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at Roper and Sons Waverly Chapel for Michael Werner, 63, Waverly, who died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2022, after a long battle with a terminal lung disease. The funeral service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at Peace Lutheran Church in Waverly. A private family burial was held on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Omaha National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Werner has humbly requested donations to the Greater Waverly Area Foundation Fund in order to complete the Waverly Aquatic Center. The Waverly community held a special place in his heart. His final wish was to see this project completed to bring joy and happiness to the community. GWAFF, P.O. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Marcia; daughter Megan; mother Patricia; brothers Russell and Dan and sisters Vicky (husband Todd Sarday, children Annelise Huggins and Lee Huggins, and Stephen Sarday and Alissa Sarday) and Chris (husband John Kremp, children Emily Costa and Patrick Costa, Erin Kremp, and Joe Kremp). He is also survived by his brother-in-law Dave Walker (wife Melinda Walker, children McKendra Walker and Melaina Walker) and sister-in-law Nancy Watson (husband Tom Watson, children Jeremy Albert and Trisha Albert and family and Sarah Albert-Reiber and Ken Reiber and family).

He was preceded in death by his father, James.

Mr. Werner was born 1959, in Oakland, Calif., to James and Patricia Werner. He grew up in DeLamere, N.D. He moved to Lamar, Missouri for his final two years of high school and graduated in 1977. He enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduation. He served for four years and trained in computer repair. He was honorably discharged from Offutt Air Force Base. He went to work for National Advanced Systems which was later Hitachi Data Systems from 1981 to 2001. In 1995, he and his wife opened and operated Waverly Self Storage. He also ran Waverly Computer Scrappers from 2000 to 2007. He worked at WiPro from 2006 to 2015.

Mr. Werner was elected mayor of Waverly in 2008 and served three terms until 2020. He joined the team at Travelers Insurance in 2015, where he worked in the data center until his untimely death.

He was a member of the friends of Bill W. since May of 1987, being active in the organization for nine years. He practiced the principles in all aspects of his life.
