FERN “FERNIE” GOODENOUGH

JOPLIN- A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 16, at the Carterville United Methodist Church for Fern “Fernie” Goodenough, 85, who died Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Solace House of the Ozarks with her family by her side. Her final resting place will be at Isabel Cemetery in Isabel, Kan.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodward Mortary & Crematory, Joplin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Solace House of the Ozarks or Carterville United Methodist Church, in her name.
Survivors include one son, Lynn McCray and wife Lavonne, Medicine Lodge, Kan.; four grandchildren, Josh, Justin, Robin and Tina; six great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild with an additional great-great-grandchild on the way; two sisters, Mary Ann Simmons and husband Gary, Alba and Patty Baker and husband Wayne, Carl Junction; one brother-in-law, Norman Rush, Carthage, and lots of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by one son, Billy McCray; one daughter, Debra Kossman; one granddaughter, Sarah Ricke; three brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Goodenough was born July 6, 1937, in Dade County, to Henry and Marjorie Hurrell. She grew up in the Golden City area and attended school there.
She married Robert McCray at Lamar in 1956 and to this union three children were born. They later divorced. She married George Goodenough in 1970, in Isabel, Kan. They moved to Idaho and she stayed there until his death in 1985. She then moved back to Missouri.
She was an awesome cook, the neighbors loved her cooking. She gave away most of the dishes she cooked. She did lots of sewing and crocheting for her family and friends. Fishing was her favorite outdoor hobby and she liked playing penny slots and her main singer was George Strait.
She was a member of Carterville United Methodist Church.
