Lamar Democrat/Nadison Pattison The Lamar High School Class of 2024 held its graduation ceremony at 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at the Thomas M. O’Sullivan Stadium. Friends and family gathered in the stands, as well as seating on the field to cheer on the graduates as they advance to the next phase in their life. The Salutatorian address was presented by Kase Overstreet, with Alyssa Powell providing the Valedictorian address. Senior band members performed, “The Rolling Stones on Tour”, along with Audrie Shaver singing, “Those Nights” by Melina KB. Presentation of the diplomas were given by members of the Lamar R-1 Board of Education, along with Lamar R-1 Superintendent Dr. Benjamin O’Connor, as Lamar High School Principal Jennifer Beem read off the names. As each student exited the stage, they were presented a flower courtesy of the junior class.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger On Friday afternoon, May 23, a variety of City of Lamar employees gathered at the Thiebaud meeting room to receive a small token of appreciation that included root beer floats. According to Lamar City Clerk Felicia Costley, the City wanted to give something to the men and women of the city who pulled together to assess the damage after the storm on Easter. Costley said, “Then they worked nonstop for several days to get things up and running again”, commenting, “The teamwork was phenomenal!”

Members of the Show-Me Youth-Ag Academy, along with their instructors, spoke at the May 21 Lamar R-1 School Board, with the instructors explaining what the academy entails, while the students spoke of their hands-on experience that they had received.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger Lamar High School state qualifying students left the high school at about 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, as they earned the right to participate in the State Track and Field meet to be held in Jefferson City. Following group pictures, the students and coaches loaded up on the bus and they were escorted out of town by Lamar Police Officer Mitchell Shaw.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger It was a beautiful day and evening for May’s Picnic in the Park, as a wide range of food trucks graced the Lamar City Park for both lunch and supper. Unfortunately, due to storms, the April event had to be canceled and from the looks of it, the May event more than made up for it. Offered were anywhere from full meals, to sandwiches, to flavored drinks and various sweets. The June Picnic in the Park will be held Thursday, June 26. They’d love to see you there.
