It was a beautiful day on Friday, May 9, as Lamar sixth grade students participated in Fish With A Cop. It was noted that a few of the kids were lucky enough to catch a fish. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a fish and fried potato meal furnished and prepared by the Missouri Department of Conservation. All of those who help give these students this experience are appreciated.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger Ground was broken on Friday, May 2, for the Golden City School Farm. Prior to the groundbreaking, those speaking were, left to right, Caleb Hughes, Robby Stafford, Ag teacher Michael Lee and Golden City School Superintendent Dennis Kimzey. Following the presentation of a grant by Arvest Bank and recognition given by Kimzey, Lee and Stafford, members of the school board and FFA members joined in to celebrate the new school farm. Stafford was this year’s FFA president, with Hughes being inducted as the next president during their banquet held later that evening.

Lucas Garfield, son of Ben and Da'Lacey Garfield, is the sixth grade Lamar Middle School Student of the Week. His favorite sport is golf. His favorite subject is Social Studies, because of Mr. Castle. Lucas likes playing Fortnite, playing with friends and going to Florida.
Students of the week
Naomi Schneider, daughter of Luke and Tanya Schneider, is the sixth grade Lamar Middle School Student of the Week. In her free time Naomi enjoys horseback riding, fishing with her brother, drawing, listening to music and playing outside. She has ducks, geese, horses, a dog, outside cats, chickens, bunnies and turkeys. Some things that are important to Naomi are family, grades and pets.

Photo by Kristy Robertson/Barton County Chamber of Commerce Walmart customers in Lamar were welcomed inside the newly transformed Supercenter at 29 SW 1st Lane on Friday morning, May 9, as the much-anticipated project is now complete. Walmart associates marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting ceremony by the Barton County Chamber of Commerce, as well as a community celebration and the unveiling of a community-inspired mural. The event featured a performance of the national anthem by the Lamar High School Band and recognition of the store’s 20+ year associates. The event was also attended by local Lamar organizations and elected officials including Lamar Mayor Mike Hull and Barton County Chamber of Commerce Director Kim O'Sullivan. To further illustrate Walmart’s commitment to helping others live better in the communities it serves, the store manager and several associates presented grants to local nonprofit organizations, including $3,500 to City of Lamar Police Department, $2,500 to Barton County Memorial Park, $500 to Barton Chamber of Commerce and $1,000 to Salvation Army – Lamar/Barton Service Extension.
