Shaw hurls a gem as Tigers take district title

Lamar Democrat/Chris Morrow The 2025 Lamar Tigers celebrated a Class 3 District 12 championship on the field at Stockton Thursday after their 2-0 victory over the host and top seed. Lamar came from the three seed to take the title.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger Lamar High School state qualifying students left the high school at about 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, as they earned the right to participate in the State Track and Field meet to be held in Jefferson City. Following group pictures, the students and coaches loaded up on the bus and they were escorted out of town by Lamar Police Officer Mitchell Shaw.

Preston Heins, a junior at Lamar High School, has remained undefeated all season in the long jump, with the exception of one athlete from Rich Hill. Heins was earned the Big 8 Conference Companship and was named District Champ. He then placed first as Class 3 Sectional Champ with a 6.61m jump (21’8.236”). Next stop was the State Championship. Be sure to watch for results. Preston is pictured with two of his jumps, as well as his jump coach, Hallee Gammon. Preston is the son of Andy and Christy Heins.

Lamar Middle School’s first ever softball team finished their season 12-1, earning Big 8 Conference Softball Champs 2024-25. The team outscored their opponents 142-21. This is the seventh grade girls third conference title this year, having earned the title in volleyball, basketball and softball. They also won three tournaments, one in each sport. Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger It was a beautiful day and evening for May’s Picnic in the Park, as a wide range of food trucks graced the Lamar City Park for both lunch and supper. Unfortunately, due to storms, the April event had to be canceled and from the looks of it, the May event more than made up for it. Offered were anywhere from full meals, to sandwiches, to flavored drinks and various sweets. The June Picnic in the Park will be held Thursday, June 26. They’d love to see you there.
