Photo by Ozark Sports Center Preston Heins placed third with a jump of 6.67 (21’ 10.6”) in the Class 3 Long Jump at the MSHSAA State Competition held in Jefferson City. Preston will continue long jumping as an unattached athlete in AAU Track & Field for the remaining summer season.

Lamar Democrat/Chris Morrow The 2025 Lamar Tigers celebrated a Class 3 District 12 championship on the field at Stockton Thursday after their 2-0 victory over the host and top seed. Lamar came from the three seed to take the title.
Shaw hurls a gem as Tigers take district title
Preston Heins, a junior at Lamar High School, has remained undefeated all season in the long jump, with the exception of one athlete from Rich Hill. Heins was earned the Big 8 Conference Companship and was named District Champ. He then placed first as Class 3 Sectional Champ with a 6.61m jump (21’8.236”). Next stop was the State Championship. Be sure to watch for results. Preston is pictured with two of his jumps, as well as his jump coach, Hallee Gammon. Preston is the son of Andy and Christy Heins.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger Lamar Police Officer Dakota Heller was sworn in by City Clerk Felicia Costley prior to the May 27 city council meeting. His badge was pinned on him by his mother, Amy Heller. Officer Heller began his duties with Lamar following graduation from the MSSU Police Academy on May 9. He had previously worked at the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department as a corrections officer.
Budget for 2025-26 passed, then amended

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger VFW Post 3691 and American Legion 209 members participated in the Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 26, at Moore Pavilion in Lamar. The service had been moved from the Barton County Memorial Park due to excessive rainfall prior to and during the service.
