Class 1 state track meet features many area athletes

Photo by Payton Morrow The Liberal Lady Bulldogs finished fifth in Class 1 in the Track and Field State Championships last weekend in Jefferson City. Fifty-five schools were represented. Here, Liberal High School sophomore Ally Barton heads for the finish line. She finished third in the 400 meter dash and second in the open 800 meters and the 1600 meters and was a member of the 4x800 relay team that finished sixth.

At a recent home game second baseman Cooper Haun goes back on pop-up while fellow senior Eli Hull sprints in from right field. Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger Lamar High School state qualifying students left the high school at about 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, as they earned the right to participate in the State Track and Field meet to be held in Jefferson City. Following group pictures, the students and coaches loaded up on the bus and they were escorted out of town by Lamar Police Officer Mitchell Shaw.

Lamar Democrat/Melody Metzger Lamar Police Officer Dakota Heller was sworn in by City Clerk Felicia Costley prior to the May 27 city council meeting. His badge was pinned on him by his mother, Amy Heller. Officer Heller began his duties with Lamar following graduation from the MSSU Police Academy on May 9. He had previously worked at the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department as a corrections officer.
