LAMAR-Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Daniel Funeral Home for Virgil Kenneth Dodson, Sr., 79, Lamar, who died early Monday morning, July 11, 2016. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. in Dudman Cemetery, east of Carthage.

Masonic Rites will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Thursday, at the funeral home, with visitation to follow

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include two sons, Virgil Dodson, Jr., Durham, N.C. and Billy Dodson and wife Alicia, Lamar; two daughters, Connie Earll and husband Shaun, Kansas City, Mo. and Catherine McCulley and husband Mickel, Aurora; three sisters, Bonnie Arnold and Margie Randall, Carthage and Emily Sue Ehnen, Smithville; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene; three brothers, Allen, Paul and Donald Dodson and four sisters, Ruby Jepson, Ruth O'Maley, Jewel Gatlin and Virgie Weiss.

Mr. Dodson was born Dec. 7, 1936, in Carthage, to Ray and Alva (Arnold) Dodson. He married Marlene Peterson on Nov. 6, 1954, in Pendleton, Ore., and together they reared their four children. In addition to owning and operating Robbie's Bar in Lamar, he had worked in trucking and construction for many years and was a member of the Carpenters Union No. 311 for 50 years. Always interested in serving others, he was an active Mason, a member of York Rite, Scottish Rite, Eastern Star, Carthage and Barton County Shrine Clubs and Carthage Train Crew. He was instrumental in organizing and promoting the Barton County Shrine Club and the Lamar Boxing Club and enjoyed the fellowship of friends in Lamar Metro and Lamar Elks Lodge.
