MARY ALICE GARRISON

GRASS VALLEY, Calif.-A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, at Daniel Funeral Home in Lamar, Mo., for Mary Alice Garrison, 97, Grass Valley, Calif., a former Lamar resident, who died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016. Dr. Mark Turnbough will officiate. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Louise Garrison, Nevada City; a sister, Shorty Godfrey, Lamar, Mo.; grandsons, Scott and Cody Garrison and Christian Santos; four great-grandchildren; two nieces, Gayle Lynn Robberson and husband Tom and Saundra Chadd and husband Leroy and two nephews, Ken Godfrey and Gordy Godfrey and wife Luella.
She was preceded in death on Feb. 28, 2008, by her husband of more than 65 years; a daughter, Jane Santos and a brother, Kenny Simms.
Mrs. Garrison was born April 18, 1919, in Lamar, Mo., to Melvin and Veda (Smith) Simms. She grew up on the family farm in Barton County and graduated from Lamar High School in the class of 1937.
She married her high school sweetheart, Raymond “Tuffy” Garrison, on Oct. 4, 1942, at Lamar, Mo. Soon after, they moved to Oakland, Calif., where the reared their two children. In Oakland, she was a leader for her church's youth group, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Her natural talent as a seamstress and interest in fashion led her to a 26-year career in a dress shop. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening and painting, but above all, she loved her family and cared deeply for her friends. In 1982 she and her husband moved to Nevada City to be closer to family.
