NEVADA, Mo.- A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada for Roy A. Slates, 63, Nevada, Mo., who died Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar. Richard Carpenter will officiate. Burial will be in Sheldon Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Survivors include one son, Reed Slates and Lindy and his son Xavier, Nevada, Mo.; one daughter, Jill Spencer and husband Travis and their son Nolan, Edna, Kan.; two sisters, Glenna Reaves and husband Jerry, Sheldon and Carla Jett and husband Dennis, Sheldon; several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends.

Mr. Slates was born March 19, 1954, in Carthage, to Glen “Gilbert” and Wilma G. (Dickerson) Slates. He was reared in the Sheldon area and was a 1972 graduate of Sheldon High School. He owned and operated Slates Construction for many years. He later entered into business with his son Reed and worked for several years in North Dakota before retiring in 2015. He had a love for motorcycles and fast boats. He also enjoyed telling jokes and making people laugh, but he especially loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
