LAMAR- Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Daniel Funeral Home for Thomas W. Carroll, M.D., 93, Lamar, who died Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Barton County Memorial Hospital. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 1 p.m.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Barton County Senior Center, T.A.T.S. of Lamar or a charity of the donor’s choice, in care of the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Vee M. Carroll and a daughter, Candi Carroll, of the home; a son, Tom Carroll and wife Marian, Pittsburg, Kan.; a grandson, Adam Carroll and wife Sheena and great-grandsons, Easton and Tanner, Springfield and a grandson, Tyler Carroll, Roeland Park, Kan.

Dr. Carroll was born July 18, 1923, in England, Ark., to Thomas Paschal Carroll and Lucy Irene (Tharp) Carroll. He attended schools in North Little Rock and Little Rock, Ark., graduating from Central High School in May 1940, at age 17. He then attended Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark. and enrolled in the Jr. ROTC program.

In May 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and became an infantry officer. He was eventually assigned to General George Patton’s Third Army during the Battle of the Bulge in Europe during World War II and was awarded several medals, including the Silver Star, the U.S. military’s third highest honor for valor.

Upon his military discharge, he enrolled at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, graduating in June 1948 with degrees in chemistry and zoology. He was accepted into the University of Arkansas School of Medicine and graduated with his medical degree in May 1952.

After several years of medical practice in Arkansas, in January 1955 Dr. Carroll joined the Bickel Clinic (later named The Lamar Clinic) and the medical staff of Barton County Memorial Hospital in Lamar. After 46 years of active medical practice, he retired in 1998.

Dr. Carroll was a member of the Lamar Rotary Club with 60 years perfect attendance, a Royal Arch Mason, a Shriner and a life member of the National Rifle Association. He served as the coroner of Barton County for 40 years.

Dr. Carroll enjoyed hunting, stamp collecting and attending Arkansas Razorback football games for many years.

Dr. Carroll was a dedicated medical professional. He was reared by a single mother during the Great Depression, excelled in academics, fought in a world war, returned to America determined to be a healer, yet simply always considered himself a worker in a vineyard. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.
