Mrs. Deay was born at home in rural Platte County, Neb., on Oct. 25, 1924, to Leo Peter and Gertrud Wilhelmina (Kuehnel) Mark. Her first job was with a bank near her home, but soon after she moved to California where she joined the war effort as a “Rosie the Riveter”, working for the Lockheed corporation. After the war she worked for the Bank of America. On May 6, 1946, in Columbus, Neb., she married Vaughn A. “Shorty” Deay after he came home from serving in World War II. After moving to Barton County she went to work for the Barton County State Bank, where she worked until 1965. She went back to school and earned her degree and licensing in cosmetology. Later she went to work for Finley Engineering, where she operated the printing machine that created the engineering blueprints.

After retiring from Finley’s she remained busy as a caregiver to several in their own homes and a volunteer at the Barton County Senior Citizens Center. She was a 4-H leader in Milford. Always full of energy and ready to be on the go, she enjoyed traveling, dancing and activities at the senior center, where she was a regular bingo caller. At home she loved gardening and quilting. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and an active member of LWML.
