LAMAR- Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at Daniel Funeral Home for Howard J. Helms, 82, Lamar, who died Saturday morning, Aug. 5, 2017, at Truman Healthcare Center. A graveside funeral service, with full military honors, will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Monday, at Fort Scott National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kan.

Survivors include four children, John, twins Jeff and Julie and Cindy; a brother, Jerry Helms and wife Joy, Kearney; two sisters, Charlene Helms and husband Keith, Kansas City, Mo. and Maxine Vickers, Flagstaff, Ariz.; close friends, Bill and Dixie Taylor, Golden City and a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eddie Helms, who was killed in World War II and Kelly Helms.

Mr. Helms was born April 26, 1935, in Van Nuys, Calif., to Dewey and Stella (Petty) Helms. After graduating high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Guadalupe during the Korean War. Returning home, he lived in several different states and had worked in construction as a carpenter, as well as at O’Sullivan Industries and Thorco in Lamar for many years.
