MAXINE GIBBS DOUGLAS

SMITHVILLE- Graveside services and burial were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Paradise Cemetery for Maxine Douglas, 102, Smithville, who died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2017, two days shy of her 103rd birthday. Visitation was held prior to the service, from 12 noon to 1 p.m., at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Dawkins and husband Bill; a son, Michael Douglas; grandchildren, Rob Dawkins and wife Dawn, Clay Dawkins and wife Christina and Steve Dawkins and wife Chris; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister at heart, Donnie Baker Jacoby; nephews, Jack Purinton and wife Betty and Joe Purinton and wife Jill and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Olene Gibbs Purinton.

Mrs. Douglas was born Oct. 13, 1914, in Milford, where she grew up, to Joseph Dewitt and Vernie Mae (Capps) Gibbs. She was a graduate of Lamar High School.

Mrs. Douglas married George Douglas in their car in Jerico Springs. After their marriage they lived in North Kansas City, Mo., Edgerton and in 1954 they moved to the family homestead in Paradise, where they made their home. Her husband died in August of 1993.

Mrs. Douglas was a member of the Smithville United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge. She was a bookkeeper for Clay County Tractor until her retirement at the age of 93.
