The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) was in town, July 18, to deliver a check for $4,000 as a matching funds grant to assist rural fire departments in the purchase of personal protective gear, communications, equipment and wildfire suppression equipment. This program, designed to assist rural fire departments, has been in force over the last 30 years and has distributed over eight million dollars during that time. Local departments are required to match 50 percent of the grant funds. This year, distribution of grants has been especially heavy in southwest Missouri. Oronogo and Jasper fire departments also were grant recipients. Pictured, left to right, are Lamar Mayor Kent Harris, Lamar Fire Chief Larry Beatty and Terry Cook of MDC's forestry division.
