Lamar Democrat/Richard Cooper
With Congress in recess, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt was visiting with his constituents in Lamar, July 21, to speak to approximately 45 at Scoopies Ice Cream parlor. He said the political atmosphere in Washington has undergone almost a 180 degree change in the last 18 months. The regulatory policies have been loosened. The Supreme Court is on a better course and the confirmation of newly appointed Judge Brett Kavanaugh may happen as soon as October 1. Employment is at an all-time high for Hispanics and Afro-Americans. He said there is nothing wrong with the President meeting one-on-one with Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un and even the leaders of China. On domestic issues, he said Alzheimer's disease research is the most expensive health investment in the United States; $21 million an hour is being spent. On the national debt, he said it is far too large and some entitlement programs are going to have to be trimmed. Unfortunately, much federal spending is out of the hands of Congress. He said that the farm bill will soon be approved, and added that, unfortunately, President Trump doesn't understand farm policy. Yet, he commented later, “I like the President a lot.” On school security, he said more money is needed and Title II and Title IV funds are being made available for local districts to address the crisis. He complimented the Missouri School Boards Association as promoting the best school security program in the nation. Near the end of his 45-minute stay, Blunt visited with former state Representative Bubs Hohulin.
