Lamar Democrat/Richard Cooper
What can we do better for you? That was the initial question posed by Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft during a brief visit with Barton County Clerk Kristina Crockett on October 30. Ashcroft was on a statewide swing of all 114 counties, plus the city of St. Louis and the Jackson County Election Authority, to find ways of improving conducting of elections. He said his most vexing problem is finding sufficient poll workers at all voting stations. Crockett said 2019 will afford some relief, then added that there will a special election next February on a bond issue for the Barton County Water District. Just before leaving, Ashcroft recommended that Crockett give him a call whenever one of her election workers asks why “something has to be done like this?” He said it may lead to a work saving method neither of them have thought about. Ashcroft said his Lamar stop was his sixth of the day.
