BERESFORD, S.D.-Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Beresford United Church of Christ for Wayne M. Wastell, 100, who died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at Bethesda of Beresford. Burial will follow at Beresford City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford, with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a prayer at 7 p.m.

Survivors include one son, Marvin Wastell and wife Corinne, Omaha; one daughter, Wilma Johnson, Beresford; one daughter-in-law, Darlene Wastell, Beresford; nine grandchildren, Kevin Wastell, Todd Wastell and wife Angie, Terry Wastell and wife Stacy, Craig Wastell and wife Kerri, Andrea Ackermann and husband Brad, Blaine Wastell and wife Ellen, Chad Wastell and wife Anna, Steven Johnson and Sherry Vandre and husband Stephen; 21 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille; one son, Gerald; a son-in-law, Loren Johnson; five brothers and six sisters.

Mr. Wastell was born June 7, 1915, in Barton County, Mo., to Ernest Charles and Sina May (Murphy) Wastell. He was the 11th of 12 children. He attended country school and worked on the family farm. In 1935, in the middle of the Great Depression, he followed some of his older brothers to South Dakota to work on area farms. He married Lucille Carlson on April 21, 1938. They farmed northeast of Beresford for many years. In the early 1990's they moved into Beresford and Mr. Wastell continued to help his son, Gerald, on the farm for a few years. He entered Bethesda in 2010.

He enjoyed farming, bowling and playing cards, mostly Pitch.
